Impiety: Formidonis nex cultus
30/04/08 || theProphet
Asia has got to be the continent with the lowest good-metal-bands-per-capita score. Still there are some worthy exceptions, mostly from Japan. Impiety hail from fucking Singapore though, a country that ranks as a musical highpoint it being the title of a Tom Waits song, and as if Impiety’s origin wasn’t original enough… Well, suffice to say that nothing else out there sounds like Impiety.
What we have here is some sort of black/grind/death metal extravaganza that, at some times, sounds insane to the point that you suspect every bandmember is actually playing a totally different song from the others. The opening track, “Genocido Primero” is a good example of this (after the orchestrations end, mind you). However, do not think that these are incompetent musicians (seriously, don’t…a friend did and baaaaad things happened to him…) because it takes fucking skillz to play what’s showcased on “Formidonis Nex Cultus”. Especially the drummer deserves attention, I certainly wouldn’t be the skin on his snare after hearing this (who the fuck would ever want to be a drum skin anyways?).
The songwriting is ace here, too. Impiety does not shun away from having more riffs in their songs than some have on entire albums, well, short albums. Even though it’s complicated shit, all the different parts blend into each other rather seamlessly. Impressive.
Lyrically, and production wise there’s not much to say, it’s all good, not great. Somewhat insipid lyrics that deal with dead christ worhippers and so on and a production where the bass is inaudible and the guitars sound a little thin every now and then. No real complaints, yet nothing to write home about either.
Special note though, I might mistake insipid for tounge-in-cheek. For example, the fact that the title “B.O.A.R.” should be taken seriously defies all reason. Also, at about 3.20 in that very same song the vocalist, Shyaitan, shrieks “ONE MORE TIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!” and the band kicks off into another cahotic chorus-thingy. Still, things like that crack me up, so I approve this time…
Definitely one of the best Asian albums out there.
